Hair Transplant Cost│ FUE Method Hair Transplantation

FORHAIR article on FUE Surgery on Seoul Economy [Online Newspapaer]

Dr. Kwon is the Senior Surgeon at FORHAIR Clinic Seoul. He regularly writes articles for various media sources in an effort to better educate the Korean public on hair loss and hair transplantation.

Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant is Different If You Know The Facts

Many hair loss suffers are increasingly choosing the more expensive FUE surgery over the STRIP surgery for the reasons that the former does not leave scars or cause swelling. As the demand for the surgery increases more and more hair transplant clinics have chosen to offer the FUE procedure. Various clinics offer the procedure at different costs. So why is it that the surgery costs vary widely among clinics that appear to offer the same procedure?

Patients deciding to undergo a hair transplant procedure agonize over whether to go for the STRIP method or the FUE method. The FUE method is the relatively newer hair transplant method involving the extraction of follicular units directly from the scalp area. It's advantage of this method is that it doesn't leave behind a large scar like the STRIP method. The STRIP method leaves behind a long linear scar on the area where the scalp has been removed.

People choose the STRIP method over FUE for it's relatively low surgery cost. However, many are opting for the FUE method as it doesn't leave scars or cause swelling. The price of FUE surgeries can have a difference of 500,000 Korean won to 2,000,000 Korean won.

The reason for this variance in the surgery cost is often caused by the different graft plantation technique used by clinics. You can't be free from scarring even if you go for the FUE method if an 'implanter pen' is used during the plantation process. The implanter pen creates the hole and implants the grafts simultaneously. This causes bleeding making it impossible to the surgeon to judge the depth in which the grafts are implanted.
This method has the possibility of causing rough and bumpy scar on the hair transplanted area.

The SLIT plantation technique is a method where a sharp thin tool called the SLIT is used. This method creates the holes where the grafts will be planted and wipes away the blood before planting the grafts in place. As this method separates the hole creation and graft plantation process, the surgery time for the SLIT method is longer than when using the implanter pen. However, it doesn't leave behind any scars. Also, the SLIT tool is changed during the surgery when the doctor considers that the blade has become dull. On average the tool is changed for a new one after 50 holes have been made.

The use of implanter pen reduces the cost drastically considering the less time and additional tools required for the surgery.

As this is the case, there are many clinics who advertise their FUE surgery but rarely their method of graft plantation.

According to Dr. O Sung Kwon of Seoul's FORHAIR Hair Transplant Center, "It is widely known that the method of hair transplant is divided into STRIP or FUE depending on the technique used for donor harvesting, however, people rarely visit the clinic knowing the different method of graft plantation". He added that "it is important for patients to find out how the grafts are planted, even if its the same FUE method, and if you want a result without regret, it is important for you to visit a hair transplant specialized clinic".
